How Remote Online Notarization Works

Remote online notarization (RON) in Louisiana allows a commissioned notary public to notarize documents for a remotely located signer using two-way live audio and video technology. Key requirements include using an approved technology provider, passing identity verification checks, and keeping an audio-visual recording of the session. 

Signer Requirements

  • Valid ID: A government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license or passport).
  • Identity Check: Passing credential analysis and knowledge-based authentication (KBA).
  • Device: A computer, smartphone, or tablet equipped with a microphone, camera, and high-speed internet.
  • Document: An unsigned electronic document (usually in PDF format) that is signed live during the video call.

In Louisiana, a remote online notary (RON) can perform most general notarial acts—such as acknowledgements, oaths, affidavits, and general contract signings—using audio-video technology. However, online notaries cannot execute authentic acts or specific sensitive documents.

Allowed Acts

  • General affidavits and verifications
  • Acknowledgements of signatures on standard contracts and general documents
  • Oaths and affirmations
  • Power of attorney documents (unless tied to excluded domains)

Under La. Rev. Stat. § 35:623, online notaries cannot handle:

  • Any document requiring an Authentic Act format (signed before a notary and two physical witnesses) 
  • Wills or testaments and codicils thereto
  • Trust instruments or acknowledgements thereof
  • Donations inter vivos (gifts during life)
  • Matrimonial agreements (prenuptial/antenuptial agreements) or acknowledgements
  • Spousal support (alimony) modification, waiver, or extinction agreements
